Narushima Motonao

A Confucian scholar and poet of the late Edo period. Commonly known as Toyonosuke or Kuninosuke. Pen name Tougaku. Great-grandson of Narushima Kinko (his father was Katsuo). He was promoted from a junior apprentice in the inner palace to become an inner Confucian scholar, and then to become head librarian. He excelled in Confucianism and waka poetry, the family school of the Narushima family, and his academic talent was greatly demonstrated in the compilation of the Tokugawa Jikki. He became a tutor to the shogun and played an active role in submitting petitions for political reform, but was dismissed from his position and ordered to be placed under house arrest in 1843 (Tenpo 14). Having been predeceased by his adopted son Chikuzan, he spent his later years as the guardian of his grandson Ryuhoku. In addition to Japanese works such as "Spring in the East" and "Kozan Koju Shiki," his family anthology includes "Shichokueisou" (handwritten manuscript held in Seikado Bunko).

江戸後期の儒学者,歌人。通称豊之助,邦之助。号東岳。成島錦江の曾孫(父は勝雄)。小十人格奥詰見習より昇進して奥儒者に至り,更に図書頭となる。成島家の家学である儒学と和歌に長じ,その学才は『徳川実紀』の編纂に大いに発揮された。将軍の侍講となり,政治改革の上書を奉るなど活躍したが,天保14(1843)年免職謹慎を命じられる。養子筑山に先立たれ,孫柳北の後見として晩年を送った。『東の春』『晃山扈従私記』などの和文のほか,家集に『司直詠草』(静嘉堂文庫蔵自筆稿本)がある。
