(1) A type of asexual reproduction in small, single-celled organisms. A process in which a process emerges from an individual cell, which gradually grows until it reaches a certain size and separates from the main body to become a new individual. This is seen in yeasts and testate amoebae. (2) In lower multicellular animals, a small process called a bud emerges from part of an individual, which then grows into a shape similar to the original individual and becomes independent. (3) In plants, branching occurs from an axis, which produces a new axis primordium and grows. If this bud is cut off, asexual reproduction occurs.
