Litani River (English spelling)

Japanese: リターニー[川]（英語表記）al‐Līṭānī

A river that flows through southern Lebanon. It is also called the al-Qāsmīya River, and was formerly known as the Leontēs River. It originates near Baalbek in the Bekaa Plateau, flows south and then west, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea near Sur. Although it is only about 140 km long, it is the longest river in Lebanon and its entire basin is Lebanese territory, making it rare in the Middle East as a river that is not related to international water issues. Since the 1970s, when the Palestinian Liberation Movement established its armed base in southern Lebanon, Israel has come to regard the area up to the Litani River as a dangerous area for national defense, which has attracted attention.

レバノン南部を流れる川。カースミーヤal‐Qāsmīya川とも呼ばれ，古くはレオンテスLeontēs川の名もある。ベカー高原のバールベク付近を水源とし南下してのち西に向かい，スール付近で地中海に注ぐ。全長140kmほどしかないが，レバノンでは最長の川で流域のすべてがレバノン領であるところから，中東では国際水利問題と関係のない川として珍しい。1970年代から南部レバノンにパレスティナ解放運動の武装闘争拠点ができてから，イスラエルはリターニー川までを国防上の危険地帯とみなしたことで注目を浴びるようにもなった。
