This comedy hall was located in Ueno, Taito Ward, Tokyo. It had a capacity of about 200. It opened in 1857 (Ansei 4) as Gundan Honmokutei. It was named after the scenery around the nearby Shinobazu Pond, which resembled Honmoku in Yokohama. In 1876 (Meiji 9), it was renamed Suzumototei, and then Suzumoto Engeijo. In 1950 (Showa 25), the name was revived and it was rebuilt behind Suzumoto Engeijo, and it reigned as the only regular venue for storytelling in Japan. It was also the setting for Ando Tsuruo's novel "Kodan Honmokutei." It was renovated in 1972 and continued to be a lively venue for storytelling until January 1990 (Heisei 2). In 1992, it reopened on a smaller scale in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward (Ikenohata Honmokutei), and in 2002 moved to Ueno (Kuromoncho Honmokutei). It holds several performances a month.
