Girl's Opera - Shojokageki

Japanese:
Girl's Opera - Shojokageki

This is a type of opera unique to Japan, performed only by women. Although it is called an opera, it is not a full-fledged opera but a type of revue, and many of the performers are not only young girls but also over 30 years old. The first girls' opera is said to have been performed in January 1912 (Meiji 45) at the Shirokiya Kimono Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, to attract customers, and the most representative ones are the Takarazuka opera company founded the following year (Taisho 2), and the Shochiku opera company founded in 1919. Both were supported by young female audiences, so some people rate them low artistically, but their directing methods and stage techniques have had a great impact on the field of show business in Japan, and they can be said to be among the best in the world in terms of splendor. It is also worth noting that former opera companies have produced many outstanding talents in the Japanese entertainment industry.
