…A general term for the living Sepioidea and Teuthoidea (collectively Decembrachiata) of the phylum Mollusca, a class of cephalopoda. In English, short-bodied cuttlefish are called cuttlefish, while long, slender ones are called squids. It is estimated that there are about 400 to 500 species in the oceans of the world, and 90 to 100 species in the northwest Pacific Ocean, including Japan.
