New building materials

Japanese: 新建材 - しんけんざい

A slang term for newly developed building materials. There are many types, but plastic-based materials have been particularly popular. These include insulation materials such as polystyrene and urethane, board materials such as polyvinyl chloride and polyester used for walls and furniture, decorative panels, and plastic flooring materials. Steel, glass, and concrete were also once considered new building materials, but the term "new building materials" generally refers mainly to materials developed after World War II. A wide variety of products have been developed that are easy to work with and have various architectural functions and expressive effects.

新しく開発された建築材料の俗称。いろいろのものがあるが，なかでもプラスチックを利用したものの進出がめざましい。スチロール，ウレタンなどの断熱材，塩化ビニル，ポリエステルなど壁や家具に使われる板材のほか，化粧板，プラスチック床材などがある。鉄，ガラス，コンクリートなども一時は新建材といってよいものであったが，通常新建材という場合は，主として第2次世界大戦後に開発されたものをさすことが多い。施工性にすぐれ，かつ各種の建築性能や表現効果をねらって多種多様な製品が開発されている。
