Japan Teachers Union - Nikkyoso

Japanese: 日教組 - にっきょうそ

Abbreviation for Japan Teachers' Union. A federation of prefectural unions formed in 1947. Mainly consisting of elementary and junior high school teachers, but also some high school and university faculty. Participated in the formation of Sohyo in 1950, and was its main union. Since 1951, it has held educational research meetings every year, and has waged opposition to the two Education Laws, the revision of the Board of Education Law, and the implementation of performance evaluations, and has advocated for the maintenance of education autonomy. In August 1989, the executive (mainstream faction) decided to participate in the unification of the public and private sectors with the All-Japan Private Sector Trade Union Confederation (Rengo), but the anti-mainstream faction rebelled. The anti-mainstream faction formed a new national organization for teachers and faculty using the National Liaison Committee of Teachers' Unions as its base.

日本教職員組合の略称。1947年に結成された都道府県単位組合の連合体。小・中学校教員を主体にし，一部高校教員や大学教職員も組織。1950年総評の結成に参加，その主力組合。1951年以降毎年教研集会を開き，また教育２法，教育委員会法改定，勤務評定実施などに対する反対闘争を展開し，教育の自主性維持を主張してきた。1989年８月，全日本民間労組連合会（連合）との官民統一への参加方針を決定した執行部（主流派）に対し，反主流派が反発。反主流派は教職員組合全国連絡会を母体とした教職員の新しい全国組織を結成。
