Awaji tile

Japanese: 淡路瓦 - あわじかわら
Awaji tile
A regional brand of the Kinki region, Hyogo prefecture.
Clay tiles produced on Awaji Island. Awaji tiles are said to have been fired when Nariyama Castle was built in 1613 (Keicho 18) at the beginning of the Edo period. They are fired at high temperatures using high-quality clay from Awaji. The production and shipping volume of these smoked tiles, which shine like oxidized silver, is the largest in the country. In March 2007 (Heisei 19), it was registered as a regional collective trademark with the Japan Patent Office. The trademark registration number is No. 5030591. The owner of the regional collective trademark is the Awaji Tile Industrial Association.
