Year of death: January 22, 1918 Year of birth: 15 May 1864 (Genji 1.4.10) A pioneering historian and historical geographer of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Some say he was born on April 14th. He was born as the third son of the Hatano family in Kambara County, Echigo (Niigata Prefecture). After graduating from elementary school, he became an elementary school teacher and was adopted by the Yoshida family of Oshika Shinden (Niitsu City). During this time, he moved to Hokkaido and submitted the results of his diligent reading to newspapers and magazines under pen names such as "Okkosei." In particular, his letters to the editor of Shikai caught the attention of chief editor Taguchi Uokichi, and became a stepping stone to academia. He was introduced to the newspaper by his relative Ichishima Kenkichi, and serialized "Tokugawa Seicho Ko" in the Yomiuri Shimbun, and served as a reporter in the Sino-Japanese War. He also wrote "Nihon Kanko Koshi Dan" (An Account of Ancient Japanese and Korean History), solidifying his position in academia. His research covered all areas of Japanese history, and in the field of historical geography, he led the way with works such as the Dai Nihon Chimei Jisho (11 volumes) and Nihon Dokushi Chizu (A Guide to Japanese History). In the field of social and economic history there is "Outline of the Shoen System," and in the field of modern history there is "Eight Lectures on the History of the Meiji Restoration," and there is also the general history "Inverted Japanese History" (12 volumes in total) which includes the issue of a historical perspective that goes back further than the present. The discovery of "Zeami's Sixteen Parts" also stimulated the academic world. The issues raised in "History of the Sea," "Considerations on Tone River Flood Control," and the collection of essays "Research on Japanese Historical Geography" are still attracting attention today. <References> "Recollections of Dr. Yoshida Togo," edited by Takahashi Genichiro (Eiichi Matsushima) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
