A pope who contributed to the expansion of the authority and power of the Church of Rome. Reigned from 401 to 417. Using the primacy of Rome as a basis, he insisted that all church issues must be left to the discretion of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). He demanded submission to Rome from the Western churches, and in relations with the East, he secured jurisdiction over Illyricum and defended the exiled Bishop Chrysostom of Constantinople. ローマ教会の権威と勢力の拡大に功績のあった教皇。在位401‐417年。ローマ首位権をたてに，教会のあらゆる問題はローマの司教(教皇)の裁定にゆだねられなければならないと主張した。西方の諸教会にはローマへの服属を求め，東方との関係ではイリュリクムの管轄権を確保し，追放されたコンスタンティノープル主教クリュソストモスを擁護した。ドナトゥス派，ペラギウス主義などの分派や異端の撲滅に努力した。【森安達也】
