Innocentius I

Japanese: インノケンティウス[1世](英語表記)Innocentius I
Innocentius I
?‐417
A pope who contributed to the expansion of the authority and power of the Church of Rome. Reigned from 401 to 417. Using the primacy of Rome as a basis, he insisted that all church issues must be left to the discretion of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope). He demanded submission to Rome from the Western churches, and in relations with the East, he secured jurisdiction over Illyricum and defended the exiled Bishop Chrysostom of Constantinople. He worked to eradicate sects and heresies such as the Donatists and Pelagians. [Tatsuya Moriyasu]
