When swallowing, a small amount of air enters the stomach, and when not in a recumbent position, it mainly accumulates in the fundus of the stomach (this is called a stomach bubble). Normally, intragastric pressure is about 10 mmHg higher than intraesophageal pressure, but because the lower esophageal sphincter contracts and tightly closes the esophageal outlet, reflux from the stomach to the esophagus does not occur. *Some of the terminology that refers to "gastric bubble" is listed below.
