A genre of criticism that evaluates new literary works and discusses current issues in the literary world. Its predecessor was the "Gettan" column published in various newspapers and magazines in the mid-Meiji period, but it was not until the serialization of "Sanin Jogo" (Three Men's Jougo) in the 1896 issue of "Mesamashi-gusa" by Mori Ogai, Koda Rohan, and Saito Ryokuu that the reading world became aware of its usefulness, and this prompted the appearance of Higuchi Ichiyo and Tayama Katai. Following on from the pioneering work of Uchida Roan and Ishibashi Shingetsuku in the mid-Meiji period, from the end of the Meiji period to the Showa period, Chikamatsu Shuko, Masamune Hakucho, Sato Haruo, Hirotsu Kazuo, and others expanded this field.
