An old town in Isumi County, southeastern Chiba Prefecture. The city center is the junction of the Sotobo Line and the Isumi Railway, and is one of the commercial centers of the region. Ohara Fishing Port is the base for offshore fishing, and seafood processing is also thriving. Inland areas produce rice and other produce. There is Daisho-ji Temple, which houses Namikiri Fudo-do (an important cultural property), a swimming beach, and the coastal area is part of Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park. In December 2005, it merged with Isumi Town and Misaki Town in Isumi County to become a city, Isumi City. 66.61 km2 . 千葉県南東部,夷隅(いすみ)郡の旧町。中心市街は外房線といすみ鉄道の分岐点で,地方商業の一中心。大原漁港は沖合漁業根拠地で,水産加工も盛ん。内陸部では米などを産する。波切不動堂(重要文化財)のある大聖寺,海水浴場があり,海岸部は南房総国定公園に属する。2005年12月,夷隅郡夷隅町,岬町と合併し市制,いすみ市となる。66.61km2。2万849人(2003)。
