A large bell cast from copper or bronze. Also called a takurei. It has a flattened bell shape and is rung by swinging it around on a long, thin handle attached to the top. In ancient China, it was rung to admonish the people when preaching religious orders, with wooden tongues used for literature and metal ones for military affairs. Bells with wooden tongues were called "bokutaku," which by extension means one who teaches and guides the people. In Japan, they were also called "nute," "nurite," and "sanaki." The "futaku" used at temples and other places are bells that are hung under the eaves and rung in the wind.
