A composite volcano located in the center of Shimane Prefecture, on the border between Izumo and Iwami. It is part of Daisen-Oki National Park. It is called Sahimeyama in the Izumo Fudoki. It belongs to the Hakusan volcanic belt, but there are no records of it since recorded history. It is a bell-shaped volcano group made of dacite and its clastic rocks, and looks like several water jars lined up. In addition to the main peak Oya Sanbe (O Sanbe) (1,126 meters), Ko Sanbe (961 meters), Mago Sanbe (907 meters), Me Sanbe (957 meters), and Ohirayama (854 meters) are lined up in a circular formation. Within the ring is a lowland (684 meters) called Muronouchi, which erupts small amounts of gas and has Muronouchi Pond. Volcanic activity is said to have begun about 30,000 years ago, but the current mountain shape is said to have been formed about 4,000 years ago. The foothills have a gentle slope and were used as a training ground for the army during World War II, but now roads have been built and tourism has been significantly developed. In Nishinohara on the western foot is Ukinunonoike Pond, where boats float, the surrounding hills have been designated as campsites, and horses can be rented in the grasslands. In Higashinohara on the eastern foot is a lift to the summit of Mt. Ohira. In Kitanohara on the northern foot are Himenogaike Pond and the National Youth Exchange Center. Sanbe Onsen Town is located on the southern foot. The sea of clouds from Osanbe is spectacular, and the natural forest of Mt. Sanbe on the northeastern slope of Osanbe is rich in beech, oak, and Mizunara oak trees and has been designated a national natural monument. [Akifumi Nomoto] View from the west.
