Paints made from naturally occurring minerals. Inorganic pigments. They are powders that do not dissolve in water and are mixed with glue. They retain vivid colors for a long time and are the mainstream of paints in Oriental paintings. The main colors are the deep blue ultramarine (gunjo), which is produced as azurite, the green verdigris (rokusho, malachite), and the red vermilion (cinnabar). There are a limited number of other colors, such as vermilion, yellow ochre, red ochre, white clay, and chalk powder, but these are rarely mixed. In the case of ultramarine and verdigris, bright colors (white ultramarine, white green) can be obtained by crushing them into fine particles. Other paints made artificially from metal compounds are sometimes called new rock paints.
