Lake Kussharo - Kussharoko

A caldera lake in Teshikaga Town under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro Regional Development Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. It has a circumference of 57 km and an area of ​​79.3 square km. The water depth is widely around 40 meters, with a maximum of 117.5 meters. It occupies the northwestern part of the Kussharo Caldera, which is surrounded by the outer rim of the craters of Mt. Mokoto (1,000 meters), Mt. Samakkari-nupuri (974 meters), and Mt. Samakkenupuri (898 meters), and in the center of the lake is Nakajima (355 meters, area about 5.7 square kilometers), a double volcano with a lava dome on top. "Kussharo" comes from the Ainu word "Kutcharo" (throat). The Wakoto Peninsula juts out from the southern shore. On the east and south shores, Nibushi, Sunayu, Ikenoyu and Wakoto hot springs gush out, and about 100 rivers flow into the lake, with the Kushiro River flowing out from the southeast. The Wakoto Peninsula is the northernmost habitat of the Minmin cicada. National Route 243 and Main Route 52 run along the lake shore, and Lake Kussharo, Wakoto Peninsula and Atosanupuri (508m), which can be seen from Bihoro Pass where Route 243 crosses the outer rim, are some of the most scenic spots in Akan Mashu National Park.

北海道東部釧路(くしろ)総合振興局管内の弟子屈(てしかが)町にあるカルデラ湖。周囲57キロメートル、面積79.3平方キロメートル。水深は40メートル前後が広範囲を占め、最大117.5メートル。藻琴(もこと)山(1000メートル)、サマッカリヌプリ(974メートル)、サマッケヌプリ(898メートル)などの外輪山で囲まれた屈斜路カルデラの北西部を占め、湖の中央に溶岩円頂丘を頂く二重式火山の中島(355メートル、面積約5.7平方キロメートル)が浮かぶ。「くっしゃろ」はアイヌ語の「クッチャロ」(のど)に由来する。南岸に和琴半島(わことはんとう)が突き出る。東岸、南岸には仁伏(にぶし)、砂湯、池ノ湯、和琴の各温泉が湧出(ゆうしゅつ)し、流入河川はおよそ100に及び、南東から釧路川が流出する。和琴半島はミンミンゼミ発生地の北限である。湖岸を国道243号、主要道道52号が通り、243号が外輪山を横断する美幌峠(びほろとうげ)から一望できる屈斜路湖、和琴半島、アトサヌプリ(508メートル)は阿寒摩周(あかんましゅう)国立公園有数の景勝地である。
