A city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in north-central Germany. It is located about 40 km north-northeast of Halle, on the Mulde River, a tributary of the Elbe. It was established as a city in the 13th century, and was the residence of the Counts (later Dukes) of Anhalt from around the end of the 15th century. It was the capital of Anhalt from 1863 to 1945. The castle built in the 18th century houses a rococo-style art museum with paintings by Rubens, Titian, Van Dyck, and others. From 1925 to 1932, W. Gropius' Bauhaus was located here. It has a river port, and before World War II, a large aircraft factory was located here. Currently, there are arsenals, automobile, machine, and chemical factories, as well as a shipyard at the confluence of the Mulde and Elbe rivers. The Bauhaus works, along with those of Weimar, were registered as cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 1996. Population: 96,754 (estimated 1991).
