Tone River Map - Tonegawazushi

Japanese: 利根川図志 - とねがわずし
Tone River Map - Tonegawazushi

A geographical book from the late Edo period. Written by Akamatsu Sotan (Yoshitomo), a doctor from Fukawa, Shimousa Province (present-day Tone Town, Kitasoma County, Ibaraki Prefecture). 6 volumes. Includes a preface from 1855 (Ansei 2). It is said to have been published in 1858, but the exact date is unclear. Starting from Bosen no Watashi, downstream of the Kami Tone River (present-day Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture and Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture), where the Akabori River and Gongendo River branch off, the book describes the coasts of the Naka and Shimo Tone Rivers, as well as Lake Teganuma and Lake Inbanuma that flow into both rivers, and describes the temples and shrines in the vicinity, famous places, historical sites, products, legends, ecology of plants and animals, and natural phenomena, following the course of the rivers to Choshi at their mouth. The book also includes 80 illustrations, making it a unique geographical work that covers an area along a single river. It is included in the Iwanami Bunko and Ibaraki Prefecture Historical Materials: Early Modern Geography.
