…Iranology began with rigorous linguistic research on cuneiform ancient Persian inscriptions, Pahlavi inscriptions and the Avesta scriptures, and excavated documents in Sogdian, Saka, and Khotanese. The result was the book An Introduction to Iranian Linguistics (1895-1904) co-edited by W. Geiger and E. Kuhn. Iranian linguistics has led to the investigation of Iranian dialects such as the Pamir dialect, the development of Persian grammars and dictionaries, and has also provided a philological foundation for the study of Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism, leading to the creation of M. Boyce's A History of Zoroastrianism (1975). …
