…But the U.S. major The Iranian oil companies (Exxon, Mobil, Socal, Texaco, and Gulf Oil) banded together to shut Iranian oil out of the world market, resulting in zero oil production in Iran between 1952 and 1953, leading to political and economic turmoil and ultimately a failure in nationalization. In September 1954, with the mediation of the US government, an agreement was signed between NIOC and the Iranian Consortium, which had been newly formed with the participation of US majors. As a result, Iran's crude oil production was returned to the hands of the consortium, and NIOC's activities were limited to refining and domestic sales of petroleum products.
