Imamura Chisho

Japanese:
Imamura Chisho

Date of birth and death unknown. A mathematician in the early Edo period. Commonly known as Nihei. A native of Komashou, Kawachi Province (Osaka Prefecture). He published Jugairoku (1639), a collection of formulas written in classical Chinese, which is thought to rival Mitsuyoshi Yoshida's Jingoki (1627). Imamura studied mathematics under Shigeyoshi Mori in Kyoto, who was also Mitsuyoshi Yoshida's teacher, but this was at the elementary level. He invented his own formulas related to circles and compiled them into Jugairoku. Mathematics in the early Edo period is represented by "Jinkoki" and "Tateiroku," and these two were the best textbooks until the publication of "Sanpo Ketsugisho" by Isomura Yoshinori. "Tateiroku" was printed in 100 copies in Edo. His disciple Ando Yueki published "Tateiroku Kanasho," an explanation of this book. Imamura summarized the basic problems in the formulas of "Tateiroku" into tanka poems and published "Inki Sanka" (1640). "Jitsugetsukaigo Sanpo" (1642), a study of the calendar, has also been handed down.
