...A branch of the Saionji family, the Kan'in line of the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan. The family rank was Seika. The family business was biwa. Usually, Kanesue, the fourth son of Saionji Sanekane, the Grand Minister of State with the rank of Junior First Rank, is considered to have been the founder, but in the Sanekane Okibun (included in the Kankenki) of 1317 (Bunpo 1), it is stated that Kanesue was the legitimate son of his elder brother Kimiaki, and Kimiaki's son Kimiaki was the son of Kanesue, and the two lines of Kimiaki and Kanesue should be reduced to one line, so should Kimiaki be considered the founder? However, Kimiaki died before Kanesue, and his son Kimifuyu served in the Southern Court, so Kanesue's descendants inherited the family, which is why Kanesue was considered the founder. ...
