In 1868, five human bones were discovered in a rock shelter in Cro-Magnon, France, along with artifacts from the Late Paleolithic Aurignacian culture. Research by A. de Quatrefage and others confirmed that these bones had characteristics similar to those of modern humans. At the time, Cuvier's theory, which asserted that humans did not exist in the Pleistocene, was still widely believed, so Quatrefage's conclusion was truly groundbreaking.
