… The first human bones to be recognized as fossils of modern humans were those of Cro-Magnon man. In 1868, five human bones were discovered in a rock shelter in Cro-Magnon, France, along with artifacts from the Late Paleolithic Aurignacian culture. Research by A. de Quatrefage and others confirmed that these bones had characteristics similar to those of modern humans. At the time, Cuvier's theory, which asserted that humans did not exist in the Pleistocene, was still widely believed, so Quatrefage's conclusion was truly groundbreaking. Similar human bones were subsequently discovered in succession in Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa from the Aurignacian and Magdalenian cultures or from Late Paleolithic sites parallel to these, and it has been shown that all of them belong to modern humans. …
