…One of the controversies over the divine grace (kṛpā) that arose in medieval Hinduism. The Śrīvaishnava sect of Vaishnavism, founded by Ramanuja (1017-1137) from South India, split into the northern Vaḍagalai sect, which emphasized bhakti (devotion) as the path to salvation, and the southern Teṅgalai sect, which emphasized prapatti, or surrendering oneself to God. The Vaḍagalai sect remained relatively faithful to tradition, writing in Sanskrit, and believed that in order to be saved by God, one must accumulate merit through faith and practice based on that faith, and that God would grant him grace in proportion to that merit. …
