An old town in Uto County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. It is located at the base of the southern coast of the Uto Peninsula, facing the Yatsushiro Sea. Loquats, grapes, and mandarin oranges are cultivated in the hills. Reclaimed land from the end of the Edo period is on the coast, and the fishing village of Matsuai in the west is famous for cultivating shrimp and other fish, and for seeing shiranui firefish. In January 2005, it merged with Mikata Town in Uto County, and Matsubashi Town, Ogawa Town, and Toyono Town in Shimomashiki County to become a city, called Uki City. 28.83 km2 . 9,995 people (2003).
