Many Catholic countries in Europe and Latin America have political parties that advocate Christian democracy, and they are among the most influential parties in each country. One such example is the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of the Federal Republic of Germany (formerly West Germany), which held power for a long period after World War II, losing it to the Social Democratic Party in 1969 but regaining it in 1982. The Italian Christian Democratic Party (Democrazia Cristiana) was also the ruling party from 1945 until the early 1990s. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
