A nobleman from the end of the Kamakura period to the period of the Northern and Southern Courts. His father was Saionji Sanekane, Grand Minister of State. His older brother was Saionji Kinhira. He served as chamberlain, Left Shosho, councilor, etc., and in 1322 he became Minister of the Right. He was involved in supporting Emperor Kogon of the Northern Court, and in 1332 he became Grand Minister of State, but with the start of the Kenmu Restoration, this appointment was revoked and he was made former Minister of the Right. In 1338 he became a monk, taking the Buddhist name Kakusei. At the command of his father Sanekane, Kanesuke became the heir to his older brother Imadegawa Kinaki, and so he took the family name Imadegawa, becoming the founder of the Imadegawa clan. As he planted many chrysanthemums in his residence, he was known as Kikutei Nyudo and Kikutei Udaijin, and later the Imadegawa clan also adopted Kikutei as their family name.
