Research into the ancient history of Nepal has progressed considerably in recent years, but there are still many ambiguities. The Vaṃśāvalī, a royal record written after the 14th century, claims that there were dynasties such as Gopala and Kirata in ancient times, but there is no definite proof. The only certainty is that it dates back to the Licchavi dynasty.
