...Diving originally refers to humans diving underwater, but it also includes the use of submersibles or unmanned underwater vehicles such as underwater robots. This article explains diving in the narrow sense and the activities that extend beyond it.
[Development of diving technology]
Free diving to collect seafood, as done by female divers (ama), has been practiced since ancient times, even before the Common Era. However, the time and depth of free diving is extremely limited. The world record for free diving is held by Jacques Mayol of France, who dived for 3 minutes and 40 seconds off the coast of Elba in 1976, reaching a depth of 100 meters, but this is still an exceptional case.
