The capital of Gambia. Formerly called Bathurst. A port city located on St. Marie, a small island at the mouth of the Gambia River estuary in the western part of the country. Connected to the mainland by a bridge. Founded by the British in 1816 as a base for controlling the slave trade. Later it became the capital of the British Protectorate of Gambia, and succeeded to the status of capital at independence in 1965. It is the country's only trading port, and exports peanuts, the main product, as well as palm kernels. There are small factories for food processing and other purposes. It is the political, economic and cultural center, and also has an international airport. The port is currently being expanded. Population: 33,131 (2006).
