...A general term for the five elements in group VIIB of the periodic table: fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At). The term is a combination of the Greek words háls (salt) and gennaō (to make), because they are easy to form typical salts (ionic compounds) with highly electropositive metallic elements. The abundance of elements in nature is in the order chlorine > fluorine > bromine > iodine, and astatine is a radioactive element so it exists only in very small amounts.
