…When the metric system was first established in France in 1795, the base unit of mass was the gram, and the kilogram was calculated based on the definition of the gram, which was the mass of one cubic decimeter of distilled water at its maximum density. Based on this definition, a platinum cylindrical weight was made in 1799, which most accurately represents the size of the kilogram as defined above, and was named the Kilogramme des Arcives after the Archives nationales, where it was kept. In order to internationalize the metric system, the International Meter Committee met in 1870 and 1872, and resolved to derive a new international prototype from the actual mass in a vacuum that the Kilogramme des Arcives represents. …
