Nasu Highlands

A plateau spreading southeast of the Nasu volcanic group, most of which belongs to Nasu Town, Nasu County, Tochigi Prefecture. Covered by volcanic ash and other ejecta from the Nasu volcanic group, the tributaries of the Naka River have formed dendritic eroded valleys. Most of the area is forest land, with small areas of rice paddies in the central and southeastern parts. Before World War II, the area was centered on horse farming and field crops, but after the war, collective development expanded and agriculture changed to dairy farming and rice farming. The Nasu hot springs are located at the foot of the Nasu volcanic group, and Prefectural Routes 17, 266, and 290 pass nearby, while the Tohoku Expressway, National Route 4, JR Tohoku Shinkansen, and Tohoku Main Line run through the area to the east. From the fresh greenery of spring and azaleas to winter skiing, the area is a year-round tourist destination, and tourism development is progressing. There is also the Nasu Imperial Villa and Vacation Village Nasu.

那須火山群の南東に広がる高原で、大部分は栃木県那須郡那須町に属する。那須火山群の火山灰などの噴出物に覆われ、那珂(なか)川の支流が樹枝状の侵食谷を形成している。多くは林野で、中部、南東部に小さい水田帯がある。第二次世界大戦前は牧馬、畑作中心の農業が行われていたが、戦後、集団開拓地が広がり、酪農または稲作中心の農業にかわった。那須火山群山麓(さんろく)に那須温泉群があり、付近に県道17号、266号、290号が通り、東部に東北自動車道、国道4号、JR東北新幹線、東北本線が走る。春の新緑、ツツジから冬のスキーまで、一年中観光行楽地となり、観光開発が進んでいる。那須御用邸、休暇村那須もある。
