Inatsu Giku - Inatsu Giku
Year of death: April 23, 1733 (June 5, 1733)
Year of birth: 1663
A haiku poet of the early and mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Itaya Goroemon. Alternative names include Seiryu, Keiyu, Takesonja, Tamaesanjin, Yumuan, and Sekishouan. A native of Osaka, he studied haiku under Okanishi Korenchu and Shiimoto Saimaro. Guided by Matsuki Tan'en, he traveled east and eventually became a disciple of Enomoto Kikaku. When Kikaku passed away, he was involved in editing the memorial collection Ruikanshi, and suddenly began to show his talent. In 1714 (Shotoku 4), he shaved his head in front of Iio Sogi's grave at Hakone Soun-ji Temple, and changed his name to Giku. He returned to Osaka for a time, but mostly lived in Edo until the early Kyoho period. He later moved to Kyoto's Murasakino Daitoku-ji Temple, where he saw the two characters Keiyu in a dream and changed his name. After traveling to various places, he established Sekishou-an in Hakone Yumoto in 1731. Many people admired his hermit-like and noble personality, and his haiku style was called "monk-style." <References> Kurahashi Rennosuke, "Giku Nenpu" ("Shimada Tsukuba Collection", Vol. 1), Inbara Taizo, "Giku" ("Inbara Taizo Collected Works", Vol. 5), Sakurai Takejiro, "Giku and Tantan" ("Buson and Issa", Japanese Literature Research Materials Series)
