An essay by Austrian poet and playwright Hofmannsthal, published in 1902. Using the fictional character Lord Chandos as a letter to F. Bacon, the work describes the barren mental state of a man in which the whole of existence that he had once felt as a single whole suddenly became fragmented, and he was at a loss for words to express even inspiration.
