A bivalve mollusks of the family Polytrichum commune (illustration). The product name is Tairagai (flat shell), from which Tairagi is derived. It is a large shell with a shell length of 22 cm, height of 11 cm, and width of 4.5 cm, and some can reach 35 cm in length. The shell is dark yellow-green, somewhat thin, and easily breaks when dry. It is triangular in shape, with the dorsal side straight and narrowing toward the apex, and the posterior end also straight with a narrow opening between the two shells. ハボウキガイ科の二枚貝(イラスト)。商品名はタイラガイ(平貝)で,タイラギもそれから転じた名。殻の長さ22cm,高さ11cm,幅4.5cmになる大型の貝で,長さ35cmに達するものもある。殻は暗黄緑色でやや薄く乾くと壊れやすい。三角形で背側はまっすぐで殻頂のほうへ狭くなり,後端もまっすぐで両殻の間が狭くて開いている。殻の表面は滑らかであるが,うろこ状の突起列が殻頂から放射状に出ることもある。これをリシケタイラギという。
