?‐393 A general in the late Roman Empire. A pagan Frank, he was the uncle of Arbogast (a powerful man under Valentinian II and the supporter of Eugenius). In 377 he was appointed commander of the imperial headquarters by Emperor Gratian, and after being sent to Thrace to fight against the Visigoths, he remained in the East and became a military commander under Theodosius I. He also had a say in domestic affairs, and was appointed consul in 384. In 388 he became the supreme military commander in the East, and led the war against Maximus.
