Carvings on the blade include "boubi" (carved all over the ridgeline) and "nisujihi" (two grooves carved side by side into the ridgeline) for tachi and katana, while "goma-hashi" (two thin rod-like objects), "suken" (a sword without a handle, although some have handles), and "kurikaryu" (a dragon that wraps around the sword and tries to swallow the head) are common for short swords.
