A Vietnamese dynasty. There are two dynasties called the Le dynasty, the Former Le dynasty (980-1009) and the Later Le dynasty (1428-1789), but the latter is generally referred to as the latter. In the early 15th century, Vietnam was under the control of the Ming dynasty of China, but Le Loi, a local lord in the Thanh Hoa region, launched a guerilla war against the Ming in 1418, occupied Hanoi in 1427, drove out the Ming army, and founded a new dynasty the following year, with the name Dai Viet and the era name Shuntian. Le Loi restored diplomatic relations with the Ming in 1431 and was appointed governor of Annam. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
