A beautiful fan-shaped bivalve mollusk of the Pectinidae family (illustration) that is red, purple, white, or other colors, or has spots of these colors. The shell is 7.5 cm long, 8.3 cm high, and 2.5 cm bulged. The shell spreads out like a fan, with rounded edges, but there are small wing-like protrusions on both sides of the apex, and there are gaps on both sides through which the byssus extends to attach to rocks and other objects. The left shell is more bulging and darker in color than the right shell. The color varies from individual to individual, with red, purple, orange, yellow, white, etc., and the beautiful mottled pattern that results is why it is called Azuma-ni-shiki.

扇形で赤，紫，白などの色の，またはそれらの斑がある美しいイタヤガイ科の二枚貝（イラスト）。殻の長さ7.5cm，高さ8.3cm，膨らみ2.5cmくらいになる。殻は扇形に広がって丸い縁となるが，殻頂の両側に小さい翼状の突起があり，左右両側に岩などに付着する足糸を出す隙間がある。左殻は右殻よりよく膨らみ，色も濃い。赤，紫，橙，黄，白など個体によって変わり，またそれらがまだら模様になって美しいのでアズマニシキの名がある。
