Born: August 15, 1883, Uruborje
[Died] January 16, 1962. South Bend. An American sculptor born in Croatia. He was from a farming family in Dalmatia. He became a stonemason's apprentice in Sporato in 1896, and studied at the Academy in Vienna from 1999 to 1904. He exhibited his works in Vienna, London, Munich, Paris, and Rome. After returning to the United States, he gained worldwide fame for the architecture and sculpture of the Kosovo Temple (1907-12), which reflected the patriotic movement, and in 1912 he became the director of the Academy in Zagreb. He moved to the United States in 1947, became a citizen in 1954, and became a professor of art at the University of Notre Dame in 1955. His major work is "Portrait of Sir Thomas Beecham" (15, Tate Gallery, London).
