Japan's first jet fighter took flight in 1945, just before the end of World War II. The Japanese Navy had been researching jet aircraft since around 1939, and in 1944, using data brought back from Germany by submarine, they developed the jet engine "Ne-20" and commissioned Nakajima Aircraft to design a twin-engine aircraft to be equipped with two of these engines. The prototype, which had engine pods on the undersides of both wings, made a test flight at Kisarazu Airfield on August 7, 1945, flying at an altitude of 600m at a speed of 314km/h and completing a lap around Kisarazu in 11 minutes. The second test on August 11 failed to take off and was damaged, and the third test was scheduled for August 15, but the war ended and the test was canceled. Japan's first jet aircraft only made one flight. Engine thrust 475kg each, overall length 9.25m, overall width 10m, crew 1, maximum speed 680km/h, ceiling 10,600m, range approximately 600km.
