A post town on the Nakasen Road in Chikuma County, Shinano Province. It is part of what is now Minami Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture. Located at the southern end of the Kiso Valley, in the Middle Ages, the Kiso clan built Tsumago Castle here to hold back the Ina Valley and eastern Mino. In the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584, the Kiso clan, who sided with Toyotomi, defended the castle and repelled the Shinano forces of the Tokugawa. During the Sengoku period, it already functioned as a post station, and in 1601, like other Kiso post stations, it was designated as a post station on the Nakasendo. The townscape within the post station stretches 2 cho 30 ken from east to west, with a population of 418 and a total of 83 households (Yadomura Daigaicho). The scenery of the former post town has been well preserved, and it has been designated as a national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings. → Kiso Kaido / Magome Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
