ginger

Japanese: ジンジャー
ginger
Also known as Hanasukusha. A perennial plant of the ginger family native to India, cultivated in flower beds and for cut flowers. It has canna-like lanceolate leaves arranged in two alternate rows on a 1-2m-tall stem, and from summer to autumn, it produces a spike at the top of the stem, with many fragrant white flowers. In areas north of Tokyo, it is dug up and allowed to overwinter, then propagated by division. Similar species include Kibanashukusha and Nikuiroshukusha, which have different flower colors. It is also called the spice ginger.
