Obitsu River

A river that flows through the center of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. It originates in the Kiyosumi Mountains, flows through Kimitsu and Sodegaura, and empties into Tokyo Bay at Kisarazu. At 88 kilometers long, it is the second longest river in the prefecture after the Tone River. It meanders repeatedly as it flows north across the Boso Hills before entering Sodegaura downstream, then changes course westward from the inland area of ​​Sodegaura. It forms a large delta at its mouth, and the low marshes are used for rice paddies and lotus fields. As an extension of the delta, shallow tidal flats continue, making it the largest seaweed farming area in Tokyo Bay, and clam digging is also carried out in some areas. In the midstream, an artificial channel was dug to shorten the meandering part, and the old channel was turned into rice paddies, creating a new river diversion site during the Edo period. Also upstream is Kameyama Dam, which was completed in 1979 (Showa 54).

千葉県、房総(ぼうそう)半島中央部を流れる川。清澄山地(きよすみさんち)に源を発し、君津(きみつ)市、袖ケ浦(そでがうら)市を貫流して木更津(きさらづ)市で東京湾に注ぐ。延長88キロメートルで、利根(とね)川に次ぐ県下第二の長流。下流の袖ヶ浦市へ入るまでは蛇行を繰り返しながら房総丘陵を横切って北流し、袖ヶ浦市内陸部から西へ流路を転ずる。河口部に一大三角州を形成し、低湿地は水田やハス田に利用されている。デルタの延長として遠浅の干潟が続き、東京湾最大のノリ養殖地域となっていて、その一部では潮干狩も行われる。中流部に江戸時代、蛇行部分を短縮する人工流路を開削して、旧流路を水田化した川廻し新田(かわまわししんでん)がみられる。また、上流に1979年（昭和54）完成した亀山ダムがある。
