From the early 19th century, this town produced a large number of imitations of Indian cashmere shawls, which were popular in Europe at the time, and so the name paisley became synonymous with cashmere shawls. Furthermore, the name paisley came to refer to the magatama-shaped plant pattern, which is the most common design on cashmere shawls. The origin of this plant pattern is generally considered to be from the ancient Tree of Life in Western Asia, but in the Kashmir region it is thought to have been a design of cypress trees. …
