A tributary of the Rhône in eastern France. It originates in the Vosges department near the border with Germany, flows south and joins the Rhône at Lyon. It is 480 km long. Because the flood season is different from that of the Rhône, the water level of the Rhône downstream of Lyon is always equal. It is connected by canals to the Meuse-Moselle, Marne, Yonne, and Loire rivers, forming one of the major inland waterways in France.
