Mitsumame (honey beans) - Mitsumame

Japanese: みつ豆(蜜豆) - みつまめ

It is made by garnishing boiled peas and diced agar with red and white gyuhi (rice cake) and pouring molasses over it. Other varieties include "fruit mitsumame" with various fruits, "anmitsu" with sweet bean paste made from red beans, and "cream mitsumame" with ice cream, and these were popular items at sweet soup shops and cafes until recently. According to Ishii Kendo's "Meiji Things Origins," the September 1886 edition of "Ueto to Geto to Goran" lists 191 types of food for Ueto to Geto, but the name "mitsumame" has not yet appeared on the list.

ゆでたエンドウとさいの目に切った寒天に紅白のぎゅうひ(求肥)などをあしらい，糖みつをかけたもの。各種の果物を配する〈フルーツみつ豆〉，アズキのこしあんを加えた〈あんみつ〉，アイスクリームを入れた〈クリームみつ豆〉などもつくられ，近年まで汁粉屋や甘味喫茶の人気商品であった。石井研堂の《明治事物起原》によると，〈明治十九年九月版《上戸下戸為御覧》に，上戸向下戸向の食品壱百九十壱種を挙げてあるが，その中に未だみつ豆の名見えず。
